Click on a district to show detailed information.
This is a choropleth map with a bar chart that interconnect with each other. The choropleth map is a map of San Francisco expressed by Police Districts. It is colored in yellow and red which represents the range from safer districts (yellow) to unsafe districts (red). The bar chart at the bottom, colored with the inspiration of SFPD uniforms, shows four specific incident types: Assault, Weapon Related, Drug Related, and Sex Offense for each district. This is a comparison of San Francisco in 2003 and 2018. The map will change accordingly to whichever year is selected.
1) Hovering over each district shows a description of what district it is and the total number of offensive incidents it has recorded. 2) The bar chart starts as an overview of the focused incidents with San Francisco as a whole. Clicking a district on the map changes the bar chart to cater to whichever district is chosen. 3) The "Click for SF Chart" resets the bar chart to the original San Francisco overview of the focused incidents. 4) There are two buttons at the top, 2003 and 2018. Clicking on whichever year switches the dataset to the according year.
By comparing the two years through this visualization, it is easy to tell that 2018 has
less incidents compared to 2003. If you focus on the four offensive
incidents, assault incidents have gone down by quite a bit and drug
related incidents have dropped significantly. Weapon related incidents
and sex offense incidents have not changed much. According to the data,
it is safe to say that San Francisco has gotten safer compared to the
first year, 2003, where police reports were recorded to the public.
Note: Interstingly, there are the same number of total offensive incidents
for Central district in both 2003 and 2018.
